MEDIA
AUTOMATED INFORMATION SYSTEM
System “MEDIA” is designed for automated processing and provision of information about
publications and other materials from mass media sources.
Functional features of the
system:
· Automated registration of publications and other materials;
· Automated description of the content of materials from the mass
media; automated topical dictionary use;
· Automated creation of information connections between mass media
materials as well as between the data contained in them;
· Referential–information service with data for publications and other
materials registered in the system;
· Automated information support for analysis of data from
publications and other materials;
· Access management for various users.
Information entities and information
scope:
The system
processes data for publications and other materials from the mass media in different fields
(politics, economy, sport, culture, science, education, etc.) without restrictions for their type
(articles, analyses, reporting, correspondence, inquiries, etc.). The processed materials are
described by:
· Identification data for the material – source, date of publication or
emission, hour of publication or emission, issue number, page, author, title, annotation,
etc.;
· Content characteristics for the material – genre, character, topic
line, complementary key words, annotation of the material in original language, translation of
annotation, translation of content, etc.;
· Facts and other data from the material, which may be of interest to
the user – data for individuals, entities and events, retrieved from its content; description of
connections between individuals, entities, events, etc.; connection with graphic images (photos,
drawings, etc.), audio and video materials, etc.
Activities
:

Entry of information about publications and other materials
.
This activity is performed:
- in interactive
mode on the system screen;
- in electronic way
- from e-mail (Internet, MS Exchange server and other mail-servers), through data preparation tools
or image scanning;
- through import of
records from export files with data for materials (which can be products of the system or received
from an information agency, as BTA, REUTERS, etc.).
Upon entry of information are used nomenclatures of the so called “rationed” fields (with
meanings, grouped in tables); formal and logical control is executed over the input data,
etc.

With the non-interactive entry of information about materials are performed the following
activities:
- automated
description of identifying data for the materials;
- content
description of materials, topical classification, etc.;
- automatic
generation of registration numbers;
- addition of the
originals (created by WORD, EXCEL, HTML, etc.), complete text as well as images, tables,
schemes, photo, video or audio materials, etc.

Entry
of
information
about connections
, contained in publications and other materials.

Automated
registration
of
connections between various economical, political and public events, between
individuals, entities, etc.

Update
and
deletion
of
information for registered in the system materials and input data about
individuals, entities, events, relations between them, etc. This activity is performed after
identification of the material (connection) and confirmation by the operator. It is entered to the
system journal.

Queries – performed by various characteristics of the materials, data
for individuals (entities, events) and relations between them, through full-text search in the
content and the annotations of the materials by words or parts of words, etc.
Information
service
:
The system provides
options for getting answers to the queries by arbitrary combinations of characteristics of the
input information entities. The answers can be viewed on the system screen, printed, retrieved into
a file in specific format and content, and sent to a system subscriber.
The system “MEDIA” provides tools for examination of the information relations between
individuals (entities, events), starting with a peculiar individual (entity, event), following the
chain of connections between them.
Platform
independence
:
The system “MEDIA”
is designed to operate within the environment of various operating systems: UNIX, Linux, Windows
2003, XP, 2000, NT, 98, etc. The system operates with any relational Database Management System
that corresponds to the requirements of SQL ANSI standard - Oracle, Informix, Sybase, MS SQL
Server, etc.
